Film Studies - "Paper Boy"

9/20/2016

"Paper Boy" is a film by Clay Borris (1971).  The film is available from the National Film Board of Canada.

Post-viewing discussion:

(1) What is the story?  How would you interpret the ending?
(2) What filming techniques were used?  (lighting, camera, costume, etc)
(3) What does the repeated hair combing suggest?
(4) What can we tell about the character?
(5) There are no dialogues.  Do you feel that it should have dialogues?

Project progress check.

Continuing on the Projects...

9/14/2016

Class time to work on the projects.

For the Book Trailer: you should have a solid plan on who is doing what, what and where to shoot your video, equipment you need, etc.  You also should know your production schedule.

For the Visual Storytelling: you should have your story ironed out.  Then, plan your shots (do some sketches) and make sure you have all the equipment and resources.  Plan your schedule.

First Project Assigned

9/12/2016

Divide class based on experience (2 groups)

For those with more experience:

Project: Book Trailer
For each team of 3-4 people:
Pick a book that has NOT been made into a movie.  Make a trailer for the book.  Your goal is to make people want to read the book.  So, make it interesting but don't give away the whole story!  Remember to use visuals whenever possible.  Keep the pace moving.  Use sound accordingly.  This will NOT be used for festival, so you can use resources found online.  However, keep a list of reference and attach to your trailer on the credit screen (not part of the 30secs.)  You can shot via any means (phone, camera, etc).  I recommend you PLAN your shots before shooting.  You can complete all work during class time.  Show off your talent!  We will be screening all trailers in class and will be doing peer assessment.

Duration: 30secs video
Screening Date:  Sept 26 Monday or Sept 28 Wednesday during class

For those with less experience:

Project: Visual Storytelling
For each team of 1 or 2:
Watch this video:  http://dslrguide.tv/visual-storytelling/
Using 10-15 pictures, make a short story.  You can only use pictures, no words or sound.  Make sure to set the scene, develop the story, and have a clear ending.  You can choose to draw the pictures, but that may take more time to complete as your drawings need to have details.  All projects will be presented as we are doing peer assessment.

Duration: 10-15 pictures
Presentation Date: Sept 26 Monday or Sept 28 Wednesday during class
