Big Ideas:

  • The principles and processes underlying operations with numbers apply equally to algebraic situations and can be described and analyzed.
  • Computational fluency and flexibility with numbers extend to operations with rational numbers.
  • Continuous linear relationships can be identified and represented in many connected ways to identify regularities and make generalizations.
  • Similar shapes have proportional relationships that can be described, measured, and compared.
  • Analyzing the validity reliability, and representation of data enables us to compare and interpret.

Materials Required:

  • Writing Implements
  • Scientific Calculator (Cannot use your phone or tablet)
  • Notebook or Binder with Loose Leaf Paper
  • Math 9 Textbook (Please do not write in it)

Most importantly, come with an open-mind and curiosity.

Course Information:

Progress Checks: Progress checks are daily short quizzes that is based on previous class discussion.  Students have the option to discuss with their partner but will do and submit their own solutions.  They are at the beginning of every class for the most part.  If you missed a check, you may get an exempt if you provide an excused absent note.  It is the student’s responsibility to make sure a quiz is exempted if necessary. Any unexcused absent will result on zero for the check.

Announced Quizzes: Announced quizzes are individual quizzes.  They are usually at the end of class.  If you missed a quiz, you may make up if you provide an excused absent note. Make up quiz is completed on the day student returns to class unless there are other arrangements.  It is the student’s responsibility to make sure a quiz is completed.  Any unexcused absent will result on zero for the quiz.

Tests: All tests are individual and will take place during class.  Students may re-write a test one time in order to achieve a maximum score of 73%. Students scored 73% or higher will not be eligible to re-write. In order to re-write, students must complete extra practice questions and discuss with the teacher what learnings have occurred.  Re-writes will take place on a mutually agreeable date and time.  Highest of the two marks will be used for reporting. You can re-write any test at any time throughout the term except for the last week of each term.  You may not take pictures of the tests or remove the tests from the room.

Term Projects: We will be solving problems OR numeracy tasks every class for the most part. Problems consist of puzzles and games that use numerical and spatial reasoning, logic, and/or patterns.  Your job is to choose one problem or task from each term and submit the detailed solution.  The solution can be in a variety of different forms: written submission, video screencast, comic strip, music video, skit, and more.  A rubric for assessing the project submission will be provided.  There is one project per term and is due 3 weeks before term ends.

Assignment: There will be no traditional homework assigned for completion.  It is expected that you be in charge of your own learning. Questions from the textbook or worksheets will be provided to complete at your discretion.  If you are having difficulty with the topic, this is what the practice is for.

Scientific Calculator: Scientific calculator is required for this course.  Please bring one for EVERY class.  You cannot use your phone during class, especially not during quizzes and tests.

Randomized Seat Rotations:  Every class, the students will be randomly assigned to a different seat and work with a different partner.  This is to encourage communication, to remove social barriers in the classroom, and to increase engagement and enthusiasm in tasks.

NOTE:  All progress checks, quizzes, and tests will be destroyed by end of June.

Extra help:

Extra help with the teacher is available by arrangement.  I will also be available during the morning tutorial time.

Food or Drinks during class:

  • No food of any kind allowed.
  • No drinks of any kind.  Water allowed.
  • Please finish all food and drink items by the door before entering class.

Class Policies:

We are involved in a mutually beneficial communal learning experience, one that requires full attention and respectful behavior toward all members of the class. In order to maximize the learning experience, students are requested to observe the following etiquette guidelines:
  • Students are expected to arrive on time and to remain in class until the class is over, or excused. All students are expected to be in full attendance until the final day of classes.
  • Students must take every step necessary to minimize distractions during class.
  • A written excuse must be presented for any absence by all students and must show: date of absence, reason of absence, and parent’s/guardian’s signature.
  • A written note is required for early dismissal. If you have a prior engagement that requires you leave before the end of class, please inform the teacher before class and take pains not to disturb other students when you leave. In the case of an emergency, please report first to the main office, so that parents/guardians may be notified.
  • Socializing during lectures or when other students are presenting material for the benefit of the class is counterproductive and inconsiderate. One person talks to the class at a time.

CHEATING is a serious offence and will result in a score of zero, notes to your counsellor, administrator, and home.
