  • No food of any kind allowed.  Please finish all food items by the door before entering class.
  • Drinks in a spill proof container only.


Course Information:

Calculator: calculator is required for this course.  Please bring one for EVERY class.  You cannot use your phone during class, especially not during quizzes and tests.

Quizzes: All quizzes are partner (or small group) quizzes; hence, both students will receive the same mark for the quiz.  Students will be working with different partners for each class for the most part.  Quizzes are short but frequent and unannounced.  There are NO make up on quizzes.  If you missed a quiz, you may get an exempt if you provide an excused absent note.

Tests: All tests are individual and will take place during class.  Students may re-write a test one time within the same term in order to achieve a maximum score of 75%.  Students scored 75% or higher will not be eligible to re-write.  In order to re-write, students must complete extra practice questions and discuss with the teacher what their problems were.  Re-writes will take place on a mutually agreeable date and time.  Highest of the two marks will be used for reporting.  There will be no-rewrites in the last 2 weeks of each term.  Please do not take pictures of the tests or remove the tests from the room.

Problem Solving Project: We will be solving problems every class for the most part.  Problems consist of puzzles and games that use numerical and spatial reasoning, logic, and/or patterns.  Your job is to choose one problem from each term and submit the detailed solutions.  The solution can be in a variety of different forms: written submission, oral presentation, video screencast, comic strip, music video, skit, and more.  A rubric for assessing the problem solving submission will be provided.

Assignments: There will be no traditional homework assigned for completion.  It is expected that you be in charge of your own learning.  Questions from the textbook or worksheets will be provided to complete at your discretion.  If you are having difficulty with the topic, this is what the practice is for.  I expect that everyone will spend 30 - 60mins on mathematics at home between classes.
 
 
Extra help:
 
Extra help with the teacher is available before or after class by arrangement only and will be in Room 130.
 

Class Policies:

We are involved in a mutually beneficial communal learning experience, one that requires full attention and respectful behavior toward all members of the class. In order to maximize the learning experience, students are requested to observe the following etiquette guidelines:
  • Students are expected to arrive on time and to remain in class until the class is over, or excused. All students are expected to be in full attendance until the final day of classes.
  • Students must take every step necessary to minimize distractions during class.
  • A written excuse must be presented for any absence by all students and must show: date of absence, reason of absence, and parent’s/guardian’s signature.
  • A written note is required for early dismissal. If you have a prior engagement that requires you leave before the end of class, please inform the teacher before class and take pains not to disturb other students when you leave. In the case of an emergency, please report first to the main office, so that parents/guardians may be notified.
  • Socializing during lectures or when other students are presenting material for the benefit of the class is counterproductive and inconsiderate.  One person talks to the class at a time.

CHEATING is a serious offence and will result in a score of zero, notes to your counsellor, administrator, and home.


 
Electronic Policies:

We are here to learn together, not to connect with people outside of class.  So, it’s time to unplug!
  • Electronic devices not directly pertaining to your participation in this class must be turned off and put away before class starts. This means you may not place or receive calls, messages, play games, check e-mails, surf the web, pop into Facebook, Twitter, and any other similar applications.
  • Please make sure phone will not ring or vibrate during class.
  • There will be times we will use your electronic device for classwork, that’s when you can use your device.

Last note on electronics:  Repeated offense of unauthorized phone/mobile device usage will result in unpleasant consequences.  Please be aware!
